The Anatomy of Self-Deception

Share with others
WhatsAppXFacebookEmail

This is Jesus According to Jesus. This reflection belongs to our Uncategorized collection. Listen carefully and think about what Jesus says. Let’s begin.

You can recognize another person’s failure and still refuse to face your own.

You can speak about truth while hiding from it. You can do good in public while protecting a private life you do not want anyone to examine.

Jesus sees the difference.

In the Sermon on the Mount, he confronts the distance between what we show and what we are. His words expose more than obvious dishonesty. They expose self-deception: believing we are right with God because we compare ourselves with people we consider worse.

The question is personal. When Jesus names hypocrisy, do you immediately think of someone else?

Who are you trying to impress?

Jesus warns against giving to people in need in order to be admired. He also confronts fasting that is arranged to attract attention (Matthew 6:1–4, 16–18).

The gift may be real. The sacrifice may be costly. Yet the desire beneath it may still be praise.

This does not mean every visible act of goodness is false. Jesus has already told his disciples to let their good works lead people to glorify their Father (Matthew 5:16). The issue is whose honor we seek.

Would you still give if no one knew? Would you still serve if someone else received the thanks? Does your private life agree with the faith you display?

The Father sees what other people cannot see. That is a warning against pretending. It is also encouragement for every quiet act of love that receives no applause.

Let Jesus examine you first

In Matthew 7:1–5, Jesus confronts the person who notices a small piece of wood in another person’s eye while ignoring a large beam in his own.

The picture is deliberately disturbing. We can be confident about another person’s problem while being unable to see our own clearly.

We call our anger justified and their anger cruel. We explain our dishonesty and condemn theirs. We ask for patience while refusing to give it.

Jesus calls this hypocrisy.

He does not say the other person has no problem. He tells us to address our own sin first. Then we can see clearly enough to help.

Honest self-examination does not remove the need for correction. It changes how we correct. We approach another person with humility, aware that we also need mercy.

Mercy does not require blindness

Jesus’ warning about judgment does not mean that truth and falsehood are the same.

In the same passage, he calls for discernment about what is sacred and warns against false prophets. Their appearance can be convincing. Their lives reveal what their words conceal (Matthew 7:6, 15–20).

We must examine what a person teaches and how that person lives. Confidence, popularity and religious language are not proof of faithfulness to God.

This applies to us as well. Do we welcome careful examination, or do we use our position to avoid it?

Jesus also tells us to treat others as we want them to treat us (Matthew 7:12). That command challenges the unequal standards we defend. The dignity, patience and fairness we want for ourselves must shape how we treat other people.

Religious words cannot replace a changed life

Jesus gives a serious warning: calling him Lord is not the same as doing his Father’s will. Even claims of remarkable religious works cannot replace belonging to him (Matthew 7:21–23).

This is not a warning to ignore. Jesus speaks about judgment, and he presents himself as the one whose verdict will stand.

Knowing the language of faith is not enough. Being recognized by religious people is not enough. The question is whether we know Jesus and receive his authority over our lives.

We cannot earn forgiveness by improving our appearance. Jesus came to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). At his final meal, he connected his approaching death with the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:28). After his resurrection, he said that repentance for forgiveness would be proclaimed in his name (Luke 24:46–47).

Our hope is in him. Repentance means we stop defending our sin and turn to God. Trusting Jesus means we receive his mercy and take his words seriously.

What will you do with what you hear?

Jesus ends this teaching with two people building houses. Both hear his words. The difference is that one puts them into practice and the other does not. When the storm comes, their foundations are exposed (Matthew 7:24–27).

Hearing is necessary. Agreement alone is not obedience.

Begin with the truth you already know. Name the wrong you have been excusing. Admit it to God. Where you have harmed someone, seek forgiveness and make what repair you can. If your words have become unreliable, practice the simple honesty Jesus commands in Matthew 5:37.

These actions do not purchase God’s mercy. They express a willingness to stop resisting him.

You do not need to convince Jesus that you are better than someone else. You need the mercy he gives and the truth he speaks.

What are you asking him to correct in another person while refusing to let him correct it in you?

Will you keep defending the person you appear to be, or will you trust Jesus enough to bring him the truth?
